Reliable disease burden data—usually collected through surveillance activities—are needed to determine optimal public health policies for combating infectious diseases. This information concerns the diseases present in a given population, the number of people affected, and the risk factors associated with a specific illness.
The objective of AMP’s studies and activities in disease burden and surveillance is to support countries in the development and implementation of contextually appropriate, evidence-based public health policies. Priorities in this area include:
- Assessment of age-specific incidence
- Evaluation of seasonality and other disease characteristics
- Enforcement of surveillance capacity
